Woodworm Treatment
in North London and Hertfordshire

a reputation for excellence

Woodworm is a generic term used to describe several species of wood-boring insects that inhabit the British Isles. These include such species as the common furniture beetle, the house longhorn beetle, the wood boring weevil, and the death watch beetle. Different species prefer different types of wood and different environmental conditions, but their impact on their surroundings is much the same.

These insects bore holes into timbers and woodwork, into which they lay their eggs. This is a safety measure to prevent them being eaten by predators. It also provides the newly-hatched larvae with a food source – namely, the cellulose in the wood. While a single larva does little damage, a full infestation can severely weaken supporting timbers.

At Olympic Preservation Ltd, we have been treating woodworm-infested timber for years. Working from our Borehamwood office, our team of experts cover a 15-mile radius that takes in the whole of Hertfordshire and North London, including Barnet, Borehamwood, Cricklewood, Edgware, Finchley, Hendon, North Finchley, and beyond.

Here is what you can expect from us…

Identifying the Type of Woodworm

To the layman, one woodworm infestation looks much the same as another – a collection of small holes drilled into the woodwork. To the trained professionals at Olympic Preservation Ltd, there are key differences to be considered. Our experts can quickly identify the particular species in your timbers and, from there, work out the most effective solution to remove them.

Surface Woodworm Treatment

The easiest way to get rid of woodworm – whatever variety might be inhabiting your timbers – is with an insecticide timber treatment. This liquid chemical is applied directly to the timbers, where it soaks into the wood, killing off both adult insects and larvae alike. Even better, these solutions are long-lasting, ensuring a new colony cannot infest the wood.

Injected Woodworm Treatment

While surface timber treatment is enough to kill off most varieties of woodworm, certain species – most notably the house longhorn beetle – are a little trickier to dispose of. These beetles burrow much deeper into the wood, enough to evade surface chemicals. To eradicate these species a stronger insecticide needs to be injected directly into their bore-holes.

Timber Repair and Replacement

If the damage to your woodwork is too extensive, we may need to repair some sections or, in extreme cases, remove entire timbers. This is not something that we undertake lightly, but an untreated woodworm infestation can cause severe structural damage to a property. In these cases, the timbers need to be replaced for your own safety.
